Thank you for your interest in joining Santa Cruz Archers! This page outlines the process for joining the club, and it is also available in a printable version. This process is designed to you, as a prospective member of the club, familiar with the club and the range; to give you the opportunity to get to know club members; and give club members the opportunity to get to know you.
There are two types of membership: working members and non-working members. Working members are expected to contribute 16 hours of work during each calendar year. Membership dues are currently set at $80 per year for working members and $200 per year for non-working members.
We also have family memberships. It costs no more to add family members, but for insurance purposes each family member who will participate in club activities needs to be listed on the membership application.
The process contains several steps:
- Attend a club meeting to introduce yourself. Club meetings are held on the 1st Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm in the indoor range. This is a good opportunity to learn about the club meetings and the club’s business. Near the end of the meeting, prospective members starting the process will be asked to introduce themselves and tell a bit about their archery background and what bow style(s) they shoot.
- Before the meeting, it is a good idea to review the following documents, some of which you will need to print, fill out, and submit as part of the membership process (it is not necessary to complete, or even begin, the paperwork for the first meeting you attend):
- Constitution and By-Laws
- Prospective member information sheet and checklist
- Membership application
- Key agreement
- Waiver form (available at the range)
- Before the meeting, it is a good idea to review the following documents, some of which you will need to print, fill out, and submit as part of the membership process (it is not necessary to complete, or even begin, the paperwork for the first meeting you attend):
- Get acquainted with the club by doing any one of the following activities (work party and club event dates and times can be found in the calendar to the right of every page on the website) :
- Attend a “Work Party” (maintenance/chores at range, scheduled for the Saturday after the Club meeting at 9:00 am and generally last 3 to 3.5 hours)
- Aid a member in a clerical task
- Provide an approved service to the club
- Attend a club event
- Complete the SCA New Member Introduction class. The class is scheduled on an as needed basis, generally after a work party, or at other agreed upon times
- Come ready to listen
- There is no charge for the class, and no archery equipment is used during the class.
- Classes are often scheduled at the club meeting where you introduce yourself. Or you can email scarchers@comcast.net for information or request to be added to the Orientation Class Announcement.
- Get a sponsor. Your sponsor will show you around the club and answer your questions about the club. Often, sponsors will shoot with you the first time you shoot the outdoor course to explain the scoring, how to use the shooting position markers, etc.
- Your sponsor must be a club member who has been a member in good standing for at least 1 year. It can be someone you know in the club, someone you meet at the get acquainted event, or an instructor you’ve worked with. If you don’t have anyone to sponsor you, let us know at the meeting where you introduce yourself and we will find a sponsor for you.
- Attend another meeting. Once you have completed all the previous steps, attend another club meeting and bring with you your completed and signed prospective member information sheet and checklist, membership application, and waver form. At the end of the meeting your application will be voted on, and on approval and payment of membership fees, you’ll become a member of the club.
- A note about keys. All club members in good standing will get an electronic key for entry into the indoor range as part of their membership. However, gates to the road into and out of the range are normally locked except during weekend open hours or club events. Members are entitled to obtain a key to the gates on an optional basis. To do so, you will need to sign the key agreement and pay a $200 deposit, refundable when the keys are returned.
- Also note that by joining the club you agree to be bound by the Constitution and By-Laws.
